Generation No. 2
2. MICHAEL CLINE (PETER1) was born Abt. 1778 in Pennsylvania or Virginia, and died 1860 in McDowell County, Virginia. He "married" (1) MARGARET "PEGGY" _________ abt 1795. He "married" (2) NANCY ELSWICK CLEVINGER abt. 1812. He "married" (3) ELEANOR JOHNSON abt. 1820.
Michael Cline, Circa 1850
Note - no marriage record for any of these marriages has been found. From the evidence, it appears that Michael established a common law marriage with Nancy Elswick Clevenger. Michael Cline and Eleanor Johnson were not married, as their son William Cline was born illegitimate. In 1941, an early Cline researcher, Toney Cline, took statements from David Cline, a great grandson of Michael Cline, who stated that Michael Cline had seven wives and twenty-one children. While the exact number of wives and children is probably not accurate, what is important is Michael's posthumous reputation for having had many relationships that resulted in many children. Also, DNA evidence suggests that individuals with other surnames also descend from the Peter Cline family and may very well be additional illegitimate offspring of Michael Cline.
As stated on the Peter Cline page, 1814 Montgomery County court records indicate that Michael was an absconding debtor. It also appears that he was still married to Margaret, even though in 1813, Michael's oldest son, Michael Jr., was born through Michael's relationship with Nancy Elswick Clevenger. Even more astonishing is the fact that Nancy Elswick Clevenger, who married Levi Clevenger in 1794 in Montgomery County, VA, was living in Montgomery County when Michael and Margaret were living there and both Margaret, AND Nancy, migrated to the Tug region at some point as evidenced by the census records.
Michael Cline appears on the 1810 Montgomery County, VA census; the 1830 Logan County, VA census; 1840 Tazewell County, VA census; 1850 Wyoming County, VA census; and the 1860 McDowell County, VA census.
Michael died between 1860-70 and is reportedly buried at Zach's Branch, McDowell County, West Virginia.
Children of MICHAEL CLINE and MARGARET "PEGGY" are:
10. i. HENRY TUCKER CLINE, b. Aug. 19, 1797, Montgomery County, VA; d. Aug. 28, 1894, Wyoming County, WV [this information comes from WV Death Records]
11. ii. PETER HARPER CLINE, b. Abt. 1801, Virginia; d. Aft. 1880, Logan County, WV.

Nancy Clevenger & Michael Cline, Circa 1850
(Note: According to Clines & Allied Families, two of Nancy Clevenger's sons by her previous marriage are reported to have lived with Michael and Nancy and may also have used the Cline surname. However, one of these sons used the Clevenger name when he was married).
Children of MICHAEL CLINE AND ELEANOR JOHNSON are:
19. x. WILLIAM CLINE (alias William Johnson), b. Abt. 1820.
As set forth above, it is believed that Michael had several other children with different women. Y-chromosome DNA evidence also appears to support this, with close matches to Fullers and Staceys.
4. SARAH CLINE (PETER) was born Abt. 1785, and died 1865 in Bland County, Virginia. She
married ABRAHAM HONAKER Abt. 1803 in Montgomery County, Virginia. According to Honaker researchers, Sarah's husband, Abraham, was a prominent gunsmith. It has been reported that a gun at Colonial Williamsburg, bearing the initials, "AH," was made by Abraham Honaker.
Of note, Sarah was involved in an altercation with the constable as recorded in the 1814 Montgomery County Court Order Book. Apparently, she was assisting her sister-in-law, Margaret Cline, wife of brother Michael Cline, in the recovery of two saddles of Michael's that were repossessed by the constable on behalf of a creditor after Michael's failure to pay. Sarah was the only one of Peter's children not to emigrate to the Tug River region. In 1832, Peter was apparently visiting his daughter Sarah when he filed his pension application with the Montgomery County Court.

5. JACOB "RICH JAKE" CLINE (PETER1) was born Abt. 1790 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and
died 1858 in Logan County, Virginia. He married NANCY FULLER (died abt. 1853) January 30, 1826 in Pike County, Kentucky. Some researchers have reported that Jacob had an older son, Allen Cline, by a prior, unknown wife. However, marriage and census records are consistent that William's oldest son was William Trigg Cline through his marriage with Nancy Fuller.
Jacob was a rather wealthy man and owned several thousand acres of land along the Tug. Jacob also owned slaves. See a transcription of Jacob's will (1858) on a page above. Controversy over the ownership of some land left by Jacob to his youngest son, Perry A. Cline, led to a grand escalation of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud between Perry Cline and Perry's next door neighbor, Devil Anse Hatfield, leader of the Hatfield Clan.
Children of JACOB CLINE and NANCY FULLER are:
i. WILLIAM TRIGG CLINE, b. Abt. 1827.

and died 1868 in Logan County, Virginia. He married HANNAH CLEVENGER Abt. 1818 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Four of William "Alum Billy" Cline's children migrated to Minnesota after the Civil War, including his only son, Jacob "Alum Jake" Cline.

7. MARGARET "PEGGY" CLINE (PETER1) was born Abt. 1793. She married DAVID MOUNTS April
05, 1809 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Margaret and her husband, David Mounts, were the first of the Peter Cline Clan to move permanently to the Tug River area (1810).

8. DAUGHTER CLINE (PETER), was born abt. 1797 in Montgomery county, Virginia. There is nothing known about this daughter. It is assumed that Peter and Elizabeth had a daughter of this age as evidenced from the 1810 Montgomery County Census. Some researchers have reported that her name was Nancy; others, that Peter had a Nancy and also another daughter, Virginia. However, no evidence of the name of this daughter, or the name and existence of any other daughter, has surfaced.
9. PETER "HECK" CLINE (PETER1) was born Abt. 1800 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and died
April 30, 1892 in Gilbert Creek, Mingo County, West Virginia. He married MARY "POLLY" SMITH February 13, 1820 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Peter Jr. and Mary had 17 children.
